New PhD Scholar – Umayal Venkatasamy
Vision Research Foundation is excited to announce we have awarded a 3 year PhD Scholarship to Umayal Venkatasamy.
Umayal’s PhD research focuses on using deep learning to detect, quantify and predict Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at its early stages using MR imaging.
Neurological Diagnostics: Dineo Mpe’s Journey from South Africa to New Zealand
Originally from South Africa, Dr. Dineo Mpe and her family moved to New Zealand, where she completed high school in Whangarei. She then graduated from medical school in Auckland and now works as a research fellow for Eye Institute, Vision Research Foundation and Mātai Medical Research Institute.
Dineo is involved in innovative research projects, including developing new treatments for pterygium and creating extended depth of focus lenses for glaucoma patients. Her research aims to advance ophthalmic care and improve patient outcomes.

Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to ophthalmology in the King’s New Year Honours List.
Cited in the Honours List for her service to the community, Prof Danesh-Meyer has founded major organisations to advocate for the rights of patients, promote public health and science, and inform government policy.
